The Marquise Cut Diamond

I must admit, I really do like the slighty more unusual shaped diamonds you can get. I’m always drawn to an oval shape as I think it beautifully elongates and accentuates the shape of the fingers. If you want to go for something different and like this kind of shape, it might be worth considering a marquise cut diamond, as it’s just not something you often see.

Unlike an oval shaped diamond, which has rounded ends, the marquise cut has pointed ends. Despite it’s modern look, it’s actually been around for quite some time, the 18th century in fact, when King Louis XV of France (1710-1774) commissioned a jeweller to create a new cut of diamond to resemble the lips of his mistress! and you can certainly see the comparison.

The name “marquise” refers to the rank above a count but below a duke, courtiers wore marquise cut diamonds to show off their rank.

The unusual marquise cut diamond is a wonderful choice for something a little different and can look incredibly flattering on the finger if set in a ring

In this video, you’ll see a lovely example of a marquise cut diamond engagement ring with a very complementry surrounding halo. Due to the fact it has pointed ends, the marquise diamond needs to be carefully protected in it’s setting. So a halo of diamonds is a fantastic choice not just stylistically for some extra sparkle, but practically too.

This particular ring is new in and features a central 0.34ct Marquise Cut Diamond with additional 0.15ct Brilliant Cut Halo. All set in Platinum it’s £2,550. If you’d like to know more, please contact us.
